Arnaud Kalimuendo Scores as Nottingham Forest Earn Sentimental Win Against Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” echoed around the City Ground as Nottingham Forest followers celebrated a further win against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Francis's decisive header clinched the European Cup back in the year 1979, but Forest continue to hold dear those glorious moments. Equally, significant changes have taken place in the weeks since the manager assumed control, with Forest appearing refreshed and securing a convincing win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of progressing in the Europa League.
Gaining Momentum with Another Straight Victory
For Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their home competition – represented a third straight win across all competitions and further built on the positive energy gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Liverpool. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's historic triumph in name, the encounter itself was free of any real jeopardy or nerves.
It proved to be an event dripping in nostalgia, an longed-for meeting and the third competitive clash between the teams since the European Cup final over four decades past.
The home side fully embraced the history, paying tribute to the legends of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö opponents, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from then were also in attendance. Both teams shared a meal together before the kick-off. Forest legends and company were given a tumultuous reception when they assembled on the pitch 15 minutes before the start, and a typically impressive tifo was unveiled in the Trent End.
Remembering History
“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed half of a large tifo, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second stunning display showed Brian Clough watching proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.
Control from the Outset
So, the hosts had soaked up those beautiful memories, but what about the showing on the night? It was pretty good, too. They were in full command from the moment the forward fired an effort wide inside two minutes and built a two-goal lead by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.
It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defence captained by their own homegrown captain, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home with his right foot from the edge of the box to score his maiden strike since March.
Another Strike Confirms Control
The scorer was implicated in the team's second goal on the verge of the interval, as well, his free header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the loose ball from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder handed a seldom start and just his second appearance since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards Yates at the back post.
Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected wide off the back Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Manchester City forward Uwe, and an free Milenkovic had earlier had a strong header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the former Villa goalie Robin Olsen.
Opponent's Difficulties
This was Malmö’s first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to match Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when the defender applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a corner. Yates had a volley blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic shot wide from 30 yards. It was one of those evenings. The manager, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made seven changes from the side that stunned Liverpool at Anfield recently, when they also netted three times, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.
Smooth Evening for Forest
It proved a hiccup-free evening for Forest. The coach could take off Murillo with the game already sewn up and later brought on 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the club legends supplying “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, as well.
