A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
