Exceptional Red Lightning Captured in the Heavens
A team of image specialists operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of “red sprites”, one of the least common light phenomena in the world, during which luminous crimson flashes appear in the heavens.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
This group of artists began their evening to photograph the Milky Way over the unique geological structures in the South Island of the country on a night in October, before encountering the extraordinary event.
Initially believing they would be lucky to get clear skies that night, but their night transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” an individual involved commented.
Upon examining his images for a galaxy composite and realized he had recorded crimson electrical bursts,” he said. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the darkness.”
Defining Red Sprites
Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the mesosphere, produced by storm systems. In contrast to traditional lightning that strikes downward to the surface, red sprites propel upward towards the higher altitudes, creating shapes that are similar to vertical forms, carrots or even marine creatures. The initial image of a such an event was captured – accidentally – in 1989, by a research unit at the an educational institution.
Brief and Otherworldly Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but an individual was fortunate. “By chance, I was gazing straight toward one when it occurred – an ideal happenstance looking at the correct area of the heavens and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he commented.
Witnessing the phenomena was a aspiration for this individual, an honored night scape photographer. “It appears as if you are observing something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it is captivating to witness.”
Technical and Artistic Mastery
Capturing a such an event demands a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an knowledge about science and innovative thinking, he stated. “It’s a really involved type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
One of the other individuals remarked it was among the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I witnessed the Milky Way glowing above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of energy danced above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he explained.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no other images showing crimson flashes and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.
“It represented a unique instance when you understand you are seeing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
