Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is developed, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
