Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The economist stated he would withdraw from public roles after legislative body released his frequent messages with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.

He remarked in an announcement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their progress".

Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released emails demonstrated that the official communicated with the financier until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his determination to resign.

"We value his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This announcement follows after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on this week to approve a measure that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its records on Epstein.

The measure will afterward proceed to the administration of President Trump for approval. Trump has stated he plans to sign the legislation, after changing his position on the matter following pressure from his base.

Email Contents

A batch of financier-linked messages made public by the Congressional committee recently referenced multiple high-profile figures in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The communications indicated that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with he often attempting to link Summers to prominent global figures.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, he said he accepted "total ownership for my misguided decision to continue corresponding with the financier".

He further stated that he hoped "to restore faith and fix relationships with the people nearest to me".

Professional History

The professor occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties recently on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in Washington where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was no longer associated with the group.

He entered the leadership of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
